The Challenge

The New York Aquarium is planning to redesign their entry experience to attract unplanned visitors, especially for the visitor from the boardwalk. After a discussion with the New York Aquarium design team, there are three key points I heard :

  • The current entrance is hard to stand out compare with neighbors

  • The entry experience need to be simple, attractive and easy to engage

Big Idea

Under the Wave

The new wayfinding concept for New York Aquarium, Under the Wave, will combine the existed aquarium design elements with the visuals of light and shadow of ocean waves. The WCS’s mission is to save wildlife and inspire people to value nature. Therefore, this wayfinding is aimed at letting people enjoy the beauty of nature and immerse the guests in the natural environment which can provide a better connection with the wildlife.

This new wayfinding system is designed to naturally guide visitors into the aquarium area and provide a solid foundation for circulation throughout the spaces.

Experience Overview

This new wayfinding system is aimed to attract visitors from the boardwalk, and provide a solid foundation for circulation throughout the spaces. Visitors will first see the colossal wave which is visible from the boardwalk, then enter a fun and playful tunnel, and experience an immersive environment in the ticketing area. Ultimately, visitors are left with individualized experiences that unite to the whole, creating specific memories and leaving a lasting impression.

Client Feedback

“My team was all in agreement about the dynamic impact the "wave" at the entry path would make, as well as her approach to the underwater canopy above the ticketing area. This project chose to embrace the challenge of working with our existing assets, and Xuewei's approach breathed new life into things that were familiar but old to us. It was fun to see things like our old wall reinterpreted on the Boardwalk with new materials and form!

I think the ocean wave is an iconic visual that not only is very appropriate for the Coney Island location, but also for the subject of the aquarium, so all in all everything feels very cohesive.

As a whole, this project adhered to its big idea and personal goals very well, without reinventing the wheel, and simultaneously added new exciting things that we as clients now dream about. We believe as a concept this holds together well and we are happy to award Xuewei in 2nd place.“
